Come to the opening event for a chess table
11am to 3pm Saturday 31 August 2024 at GO4 Cafe, Old Heath Recreation Ground.
Come along and play chess for free – with prizes for juniors. At the GO4 Cafe, in addition to the usual great coffee, snacks and ices, you can be part of the official opening event – make it an occasion and dress for the part!
The Mayor of Colchester, Councillor Lesley Scott-Boutell, will be cutting the ribbon to officially open the chess table at 11am.
There will be extra chess boards in operation. ‘Chess variants’ will be on offer – such as chess960, duck chess and bughouse (ideal for the two boards on one table) along with problem solving; especially for Colchester, some from Jonathan Penrose‘s games and some ‘helpmates’ he composed.
Also some fun chess-related games! How fast can you lay out a chess board (world record with one hand is around 29 seconds)? Can you meet the Bill Hartston Challenge and build the tallest stack of pieces?
Even if you don’t play chess but would like to learn, someone will be available to help you.
The event has been organised with the support of Colchester’s active chess clubs, groups and meetups – you can find out more about them on the day or visit the ColCHESSter website.
