From Humble Beginnings to 100 Members

Founded by Jay Rusecki in 2023, our club has grown from just four players to over 100 in a remarkably short time. Jay, a passionate chess enthusiast and former top-five player in Lithuania, created the club to provide a welcoming space for chess lovers of all ages and abilities.

A Place for Everyone

E2 E4 Chess Club is open to everyone, regardless of experience level. We have seen a rise in junior players, with our youngest member being just seven years old. Parents have shared positive feedback on how chess has improved their children’s behaviour and confidence, both at home and in school.

Our club is also a safe and supportive space for individuals facing mental health challenges, autism, or physical disabilities. A remarkable example is Martin, one of our dedicated members, who overcame physical difficulties to play and win his first league game—a truly inspiring moment for us all!

Building a Strong Community

A key figure in our journey has been David York, a well-respected member of the local chess community. David generously provided us with high-quality chess boards and pieces, playing a pivotal role in the club’s success. Our secretary, Chris Lane, acknowledges David’s contributions and our collective gratitude for his support.

The Growing Popularity of Chess

Chess is experiencing a new boom, fuelled by popular media like The Queen’s Gambit and the surge of online play during the pandemic. However, there is still work to be done to encourage more women and girls to participate in the sport. We aim to make our club more diverse and inclusive.

A Vision for the Future

Jay’s ultimate goal is to establish a chess academy in Colchester, providing opportunities for young talents to develop into top players. The club has already gained international recognition, receiving a special video from Magnus Carlsen’s father and coach, offering a glimpse into the world champion’s trophy room!

Be Part of Our Journey

Before we achieve our dream of becoming an academy, we are working towards becoming a charity, partnering with Autism Anglia and the NHS to support mental health initiatives.

We welcome everyone to join us—whether you are new to chess, a casual player, or someone looking to compete at a high level. Our sessions run every Tuesday from 4:30 PM to 9:00 PM at the Colchester Spiritualist Centre in Fennings Chase.

We look forward to seeing you at the board!
